Fawnflower padded through the Golden Forest, annoyed. Today, she didn't know who she was annoyed with. Herself? StarClan? She was annoyed because she didn't have anything to do. As a medicine cat, she could gather herbs, but no one needed them because they were in StarClan. All she could do was interperet signs to come. Fawnflower stopped by a small stream, and looked at the sparkling water. She sighed, and lay down next to the stream, letting the babbling of its currents sooth her annoyance.

Humming as she made her way, Riverpaw thought about the last day she was alive. It had seemed like it would be a normal day...The sun had been out, and she'd been about to ask Him about His life as an apprentice. That was when the rogues attacked... The ex-apprentice's voice died in her throat, instead turning to a soft growl. Then Riverpaw noticed Fawnflower and padded over. "How's your day?" she asked, settling herself close to the waters.

Fawnflower opened her eyes. "Okay, I guess," she said. "I'm just mildly annoyed that I have absolutely no medicine cat duties, unless you count interperting signs of what's to come, but everybody does that here!" Her tone grew sharp at the end. "The worst part of the problem is I don't know who I'm annoyed at, so I can't snap at them for making me annoyed." She lowered her head. Now she wanted to snap at herself, for being sharp with Riverpaw, who had done absolutely nothing wrong. But if she snapped at herself, everyone would think that she was insane. Fawnflower closed her eyes, and sighed.

Riverpaw was silent for a few seconds, and she watched the waters. Finally, to break the silence, and because she couldn't think of anything else to say, she said, "I was almost a medicine cat apprentice, you know."

"You were?" Fawnflower asked in surprise. She had spoken with the apprentice before, and Riverpaw had never struck her as the kind of cat that would have aspired to be a medicine cat. Maybe because you never paid attention to cats from other Clans, a voice in her head said. Fawnflower banished the pesky thought.

(Umm...I don't think she was. Reedvoice was about 10 moons when he received his scratch, and Pigeonstar would have been six or seven moons. Pigeonstar is about eight moons older than Riverpaw. Or...would have been. At the time of her death O.o)

((Yeah... Reedvoice was actually about seventy moons old when he retired. Soooo.... he recieved his scratch at around sixty moons (He was about 5/6 through his warrior-ship, so that would make him about sixty moons when he got his scratch. I think.) And Fawnflower died then, but she was a little bit older than Reedvoice. The way that I was figuring this was that Fawnflower died right before Brightsong became deputy. But I changed it anyways.))

(Ohhh, I thought it said "apprenticeship". XD Then, yeah, they met in life.)
Riverpaw nodded, eyes not leaving the slowly glistening stream in front of her. "Mhmm. But Hauntingstar decided to make me Pigeonstar's apprentice, instead." She paused, but couldn't completely stop herself from blurting, "I wonder--! If things...had been different..." The ex-apprentice quickly shut her eyes and turned her face away. "Thinking too much is not a good occupation, up here..."

"What else is there to do when there aren't prophecies lurking around every corner?" Fawnflower asked. "The Clans seem to be having a relatively peaceful period right now, and there haven't been any signs of danger."

"No there haven't," quietly muttered Riverpaw, as if worried, then she straightened and faced Fawnflower again. "Am I being paranoid if I think that's a little suspicious?"

"Paranoid? No, not really. It's unusual for us to not have to send any omens at all." Fawnflower paused. "Well, I haven't been in StarClan as long as some cats, but there were more omens before. I bet that something big is about to happen."

Riverpaw sighed with relief that she wasn't the only one who thought so. "I thought that, too. Do you have any idea what it could be?"

"No. The Clans seem peaceful enough now, and I don't see any cause for war in the near future. Maybe those rogues that were troubling TreeClan will come back?" Fawnflower shook her head. "No. TreeClan made sure that they wouldn't bother the Clans. I don't know. Any ideas, Riverpaw?"

The younger she-cat shook her head, thinking. "There's really no reason to think danger, except the fact that there's no reason in the first place..." She hissed, and discovered that she, too, was annoyed. "Life is chasing its tail! What can't there be any real answers?!"

"Beats me," Fawnflower sighed. "Life is always confusing. Even being in StarClan is confusing, since we don't know what's going on!" The former medicine cat shook her head. "This is making my head hurt, but if we don't try and figure out what's going on, then who will?"

Seeing this reasoning, Riverpaw sighed and thought quietly. "Maybe a natural disaster?"

"Maybe," Fawnflower said. "Maybe an avalanche from the mountains, or flooding?" Fawnflower paused to consider other ideas.

"Twolegs," suggested the apprentice, tail twitching. "Forest fire's a possibility, too."

"Drought, rogues," Fawnflower listed. "Huh. So many possibilities... I wish we could do more than guess."

Riverpaw agreed and stepped lightly into the water where is was the most shallow. She shivered at the cold, but was happy she could still feel the sensation. "There could just be plain bad weather, a traitor, or poison..." She wasn't sure if she meant poison physically or metaphorically. It could be either... Riverpaw shivered at the thought.
